Capsule Geology

The Bay 58-Cove 18 occurrence is located south east of Stephens Creek and approximately 1.3 kilometres northwest of Frances (Bay) Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by northwest-trending belts of basaltic volcanics and carbonate sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Karmutsen and Quatsino formations (Vancouver Group) and mafic volcanics and sediments of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group (Holberg volcanic unit, Nahwitti River wacke and Parson Bay Formation). These volcanic and sedimentary rocks have been intruded by granodioritic rocks of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.

Locally, as defined by drilling, chlorite-sericite-biotite-magnetite¬altered and highly fractured andesites and porphyritic intrusives contain fracture fillings of quartz, calcite and zeolite hosting disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite with minor molybdenite.

In 1984, drillhole E-62 yielded 0.11 per cent copper and 0.011 per cent molybdenum over 109.5 metres, including 0.24 per cent copper over 6.0 metres (Assessment Report 13536).

In 1985, drillhole E-61, located on the Bay 58 claim, averaged 0.18 per cent copper over 90.0 metres, including 0.273 per cent copper and 0.018 per cent molybdenum over 12.0 metres (Assessment Report 13346). A second drillhole (E-60), located a short distance southeast on the Cove 18 claim, averaged 0.14 per cent copper over 93.0 metres (Assessment Report 13346).

In 2020, a float sample (20BAY3) of andesite with pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and molybdenite from the occurrence area assayed 0.369 per cent copper, 1.00 per cent zinc and 60.2 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 39197).

Work History

In 1965 and 1966, BHP-Utah Mines completed programs of geological mapping, soil sampling and ground geophysical programs on the area as the Bay and Cove claims.

In 1983, a program of geological mapping was completed. In 1984, two drillholes, totalling 246.7 metres, and six percussion drill holes, totalling 481.7 metres, were completed on the area. In 1985, BHP-Utah Mines completed two diamond drill holes, totalling 337.7 metres, to north-northwest on the Bay 58 and Cove 18 claims. In 1988, BHP-Utah Mines completed a program of soil sampling and a 390.0 line-kilometre airborne geophysical survey on the area.

In 2016, the area was prospected by Tech-X Resources Ltd. In 2020, a minor program of rock sampling and a 1.9 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey was completed on the area as the Bay 56 property.
